JACKSONVILLE – The Jax State women's basketball team dropped their first game in conference play in a 69-52 decision against Middle Tennessee inside Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Brooklyn McDaniel had 14 points to lead the way for the Gamecocks. She also tied
Mya Barnes for a team-best eight rebounds. Barnes led the team with 36 minutes played, while McDaniel followed with 34 minutes of action.
Eden Sample joined McDaniel in double-figures with 13 points on an efficient 4-of-8 shooting and 3-of-6 from three. Barnes added nine points on 3-of-9 shooting in the contest. Jax State shot 16-of-52 from the floor, 8-of-29 from three, and 12-of-13 from the free throw line.
Jax State got out to a 7-0 lead. Middle Tennessee got on the board with a made three at the 4:56 mark of the first. The Gamecocks answered with a pair of made threes to go up 16-3 with just over two minutes left in the opening quarter. MTSU scored two straight to make it 16-7 Gamecocks after the first.
In the second, the Gamecocks and Blue Raiders shared buckets early on. Jax State went up 23-16 thanks to a layup from Maria Sanchez-Ponce at the 4:36 mark in the first half. MTSU cut to a two-point Gamecock advantage with a made three with just under three minutes on the clock. The Blue Raiders hit a three with 49 seconds left in the second to take a 26-25 lead into halftime.
Middle Tennessee then outscored Jax State 26-11 in the third quarter to hold a 52-36 lead heading into the fourth period. The fourth quarter was much closer as Middle Tennessee only outscored Jax State 17-16. McDaniel cut it to a 14-point MTSU lead with a layup, making it 54-40 with 8:24 left in the game.
MTSU shot 27-of-54 from the field and 12-of-23 from three. Alayna Contreras led the Blue Raiders with 21 points.
Jax State (7-7, 1-1) will hit the road for a showdown against Florida International on Jan. 8 before heading to Missouri State on Jan. 10.
