JACKSONVILLE — The Gamecock bullpen worked five hitless innings to make a second inning solo home run by Grayson Ashe stand for a 1-0 win on Sunday for the first win of the year.
Maddox McDougall picked up the win, striking out two over two innings of work with three fly outs and a ground out. Skyler Hutto earned his first save, working three innings with three strikeouts and coaxed four groundouts.
"Getting out of here with one win, and obviously not what our goal was, but it's something to build off, something to get better and we have a long season to go," said coach Steve Bieser.
Beau Bryans got the start and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first with a pair of strikeouts after walking three in a row. He did not factor in the decision after throwing 86 pitches over four innings of work, allowing just two hits and striking out seven of the 19 he faced.
"You have to trust his stuff is so electric, he's always got a chance to work himself out of it," said Bieser of Bryans.
Ashe's solo homer traveled 411 feet over the left-center field wall in the bottom of the second to give the Gamecocks the lead.
Jax State threatened in the third with the bases loaded after Greg LaChance doubled with two outs, Ashe was walked intentionally, and Orlando Pena drew a walk, but a cue shot into the glove of the second baseman ended the inning.
The Bearcats stranded four baserunners over the final four frames, none at second or third base. Matthew Cash helped turn a key inning-ending double play, fielding a hot shot while playing in at third and firing to second to end the inning.
The Gamecocks will host Georgia State on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
