JACKSONVILLE — Orlando Peña's bunt-single turned into a hit and an error to plate Jaxon Pate and secure Jax State's second victory of the season, 3-2, against the Georgia State Panthers on Tuesday night at Jim Case Stadium.
The Gamecocks handed the Panthers their first loss of the season in the walk-off victory.
Georgia State (3-1) built a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, starting with an RBI-single and followed by a double play, where a runner was able to make it home and plate the second run of the game.
Jax State (2-2) would not get on the board until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Grayson Ashe's sac fly to right field scored Greg LaChance, cutting the Georgia State lead in half at 2-1.
The Gamecocks tied the game with Pate's bases-loaded hit by pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring Trey King.
In the bottom of the ninth, Luke Williams nearly recorded his first stolen base of the season to get himself into scoring position. However, after an appeal and video review, he was deemed to be tagged prior to reaching the bag, ending Jax State's attempt to end the game in the ninth.
The game would progress to the bottom of the 11th inning, where Peña's bunt would have put runners on the corners. However, the Panther's first baseman sailed the throw over the second baseman who was covering first, allowing Pate to reach the plate and make Peña the hero for the night.
Jax State's pitching had a second stellar outing of the season, striking out a total of 14 batters and getting the Panthers to strand eight runners.
Jackson Sleeper earned the win as the pitcher who was active when Pate scored. Jacob Crews took his first loss of the season after giving up the game-winning run.
The Gamecocks will remain home to host the Toledo Rockets for a three-game set beginning on Friday, February 20.
