Softball Closes Mardi Gras Invitational with Wild Comeback Win

The Gamecocks went from down seven to a four-run win in their final four outs in Sunday's final game of the Mardi Gras Invitational at South Alabama.

Jax State scored 12 runs in the last two innings to come away with a 16-12 victory to finish the weekend with a 3-2 record and are 6-4 overall.

Trailing 11-4, Emma Elrod drove in Haleigh Cushingberry with two outs in the top of the sixth to begin chipping away at the deficit. She scored on a Kailey Martin single to right to make it 11-6. Makayln Kyser drove home Morgan Nowakowski. Aria Davis made it a two-run game with a two-run single to right.

The Broncos answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly. In the top of the seventh, Jax State scored seven straight runs all with one out. Cushingberry scored on an error to get her team back within two, then a single by Martin brought home Mikayla Deville. That was Martin's fourth hit of the game and her fifth RBI of the contest to cut the deficit to one.

Martin also hit a two-run homer in the first to get the scoring started, and hit an RBI double to center in the third to regain the lead at 3-2.

A two-run double by Ashley Phillips gave the Gamecocks their first lead since going up 4-2 in the top of the third on an RBI single to second by Davis. Davis then brought home two more with a double for her fourth and fifth RBIs of the day, capping a 3-for-4 effort.

Davis then scored on a fielder's choice by Cushingberry.

Yulai Woodruff worked a clean seventh, to pick up her second win of the season. The freshman allowed just one earned on four hits over 2.1 innings of work.

Elrod, Nowakowski, and Kyser all finished with two hits apiece.

The Gamecocks will host Chattanooga on Wednesday for their home opener.
