JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Jax State softball won its sixth home game of the season on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Samford Bulldogs 4-0 at Jana McGinnis Field for Education Day.
The Gamecocks (17-8, 2-1 CUSA) were able to play on their home field for the first time in eight games and took advantage of the home crowd support by tallying its sixth shutout victory of the season.
Jax State warmed the bats up quickly, as
Makalyn Kyser blasted a two-run home run down the left field line in the first inning to bring home
Kailey Martin for the first two runs of the game to give the Gamecocks the early advantage on the scoreboard.
Morgan Nowakowski was able to add to the offensive momentum in the second inning, ripping a single into shallow right field to bring home
Haleigh Cushingberry and
Amber Reed to score another pair for Jax State.
While the bats began to cool off for the Gamecocks in the latter part of the contest, the pitching was the opposite as freshman
Makenna Moore held the Bulldogs hitless until the fifth inning.
Moore tallied her fifth win of the season in the matchup, pitching six innings, allowing no runs off of three hits and three walks. The freshman arm tallied four strikeouts in the game as well.
The Gamecocks only managed four hits in the contest, but took advantage of every single one to secure the win.
Emma Elrod, Nowakowski, Kyser and Reed were responsible for all four hits by Jax State, with Nowakowski and Kyser tallying two RBIs each.
As a team, the Gamecocks were walked five times, bringing their season total to 136 free passes.
