JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — It took until the six inning for Jax State to plate its first runs of the day, but it made the most of the opportunity as the Gamecocks posted four scores in the bottom half of the inning to defeat the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 4-2 to take the second of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Jana McGinnis Field.
The Gamecocks had just one hit as a team until the sixth inning, when they proceeded to pick up three more and score all four of their runs, courtesy of a two-RBI double and a two-run home run right after.
Much like game one of the series, both squads were locked in a pitcher's duel that featured Jax State's senior arm
Jaliyah Holmes face off against the Bulldogs' sophomore pitcher Laney Johnson.
The Gamecocks picked up the first hit of the game in the opening inning after a leadoff single from
Emma Elrod, which would be one of only three available baserunners that Jax State could muster until the sixth frame.
Louisiana Tech, however, managed to pick up at least one hit in the second, third and fourth innings, but left a total of five runners on base during the span.
The Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth with a leadoff solo home run by Reagan Marchant to put her team ahead, which was then followed by a sacrifice fly to bring home another to put Louisiana Tech ahead by two scores.
Needing a late spark, Jax State got what it needed as
Haleigh Cushingberry led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk, followed by a single by Elrod for her second hit of the day.
Finally,
Morgan Nowakowski ripped a double into left field that brought both runners home to tie the game up with no outs. Then, after a pitching change by the Bulldogs, junior
Amber Reed belted a two-run blast over the right field wall to add two more runs to Jax State's tally and take the lead.
Holmes proceeded to allow a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, but retired the next three batters in order to secure her second victory of the season. Holmes pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs off seven hits and three walks, along with tallying four strikeouts on the day.
Elrod led the Gamecocks at the dish, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles and a run scored. Reed and Nowakowski were responsible for the other two hits.
Saturday's win marks the first time that Jax State has won a series against Louisiana Tech in school history and the third win against the Bulldogs at home all-time.
The Gamecocks will look to complete the series sweep on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. at Jana McGinnis Field.
