Phillips Walk-Off Home Run in Extras Puts Jax State over LA Tech for Series Sweep

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Facing a potential spoilage of a series sweep over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon, Jax State had its back against the wall in the late innings for the second straight game, and scored three runs across the final two frames that resulted in a 4-2 victory over the Bulldogs in eight innings, featuring a two-run walk-off home run by Ashley Phillips.

The walk-off blast was the Gamecocks' first game-winning homer at home since March 24, 2024, when Emma Jones-Hubbard lifted a solo shot out to right center to defeat Middle Tennessee 4-3.

Jax State (23-9, 8-1 CUSA) is now winners of three straight contests, along with seven straight wins in Conference USA play, including back-to-back weekend series sweeps at home over Western Kentucky and Louisiana Tech. The Gamecocks are now 12-1 at home this season with seven straight victories at Jana McGinnis Field.

Louisiana Tech (17-1, 3-6 CUSA) jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, plating its first two runs, via an RBI double down the right field line, followed by a grounder down the first base line to bring home another.

The Gamecocks were able to retaliate in the bottom of the second after a sacrifice fly by Aria Davis to make it a 2-1 game, but were unable to find the scoreboard again until the seventh inning.

In the circle, freshman Makenna Moore came in relief midway through the top of the second inning and held the Bulldogs scoreless throughout the remainder of the game, only allowing three hits from the opponent in her 6.2 innings of action.

Down to its last out in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on second, Jax State had one final chance to keep the sweep alive, in which Morgan Nowakowski delivered a double off the left field wall to bring home Haleigh Cushingberry to tie the game up at two runs apiece and send the game to extra innings.

After forcing Louisiana Tech to go three up, three down in the top of the eighth, the Gamecocks had another opportunity to keep the momentum alive and did just that with Makalyn Kyser's one-out double to eventually bring up Phillips.

Phillips proceeded to fall to an 0-2 count immediately and proceeded to foul off the next four pitches, along with taking a ball before crushing the next offering well over the wall in left center to walk it off for the Gamecocks for her first and only hit of the day.

As a unit, Jax State tallied seven hits, with Kyser leading all batters with two hits—both of which were doubles. Additionally, Cushingberry tallied the only stolen base of the game in which she later scored off of Nowakowski's double in the seventh.

Moore claimed her eighth win of the season in the circle against Louisiana Tech, winning her fifth straight game. Throughout the weekend, Moore pitched a total of 13.2 innings, allowing no runs off seven hits, while tallying 12 combined strikeouts over the Bulldogs.

The Gamecocks will hit the road for the next four games, beginning with a trip to Tuscaloosa next Wednesday to take on No. 4 Alabama at Rhoads Stadium on March 25, at 3:30 p.m.
