BIRMINGHAM — The Jax State Gamecocks fell 16-11 to the UAB Blazers on Tuesday night at Young Memorial Field in Birmingham.
Jax State falls to 21-5 on the year while UAB collects its 15th win of the year to move to 15-10.
Ryan Geraghty was tagged with the loss after giving up the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Riley Miller took the victory in the contest.
The Gamecocks came out hot to start the game, racing out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first, highlighted by a three-run homer by Ace Williamson to set the Gamecocks up with that 6-0 lead.
The Blazers cut the lead in half in the home half of the same frame with a bases-loaded walk, an RBI-groundout, and a sac fly. They added another run in the bottom of the second with another sac fly.
Jaxon Pate added a run in the top of the third on an RBI-single up the middle, plating Trey King to make it 7-4.
The Blazers took the lead in the bottom of the third, first tying the game on a bases-clearing double, scoring three. An RBI-single gave the Blazers a 8-7 lead in that frame.
Jax State reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth, first tying the game with an RBI-double from Grayson Ashe, then taking the lead on an RBI-single by King, scoring Ashe.
Between the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the seventh, the Blazers scored seven runs, with four in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two on the seventh, with both of those coming on solo homers with two outs.
In the top of the eighth, the Gamecocks started to chip away at the lead, starting with an RBI-double from Cooper Blauser to score Pate, followed by an RBI-groundout to plate Johnson, cutting the lead to 15-11.
The Blazers added a run on a bases-loaded hit in the bottom of the eighth to add a run to cement the score at 16-11.
Jax State will travel to Ruston, Louisiana, to take on LA Tech in a Conference USA series. Action from "The Love Shack" will begin Friday night at 6 p.m.
