Baseball Drops Series Finale at Liberty, 4-2

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Jax State baseball dropped its first Conference USA series of the season, falling 4-2 to the Liberty Flames on Sunday afternoon at Worthington Field.

Jax State falls to 29-8 and 13-2 overall, holding a one-game lead over Missouri State in the CUSA standings to remain on top. Liberty improves to 25-10 and ties DBU for third in the standings at 11-4.

Steven Cash fell to 4-2 on the year after giving up all four runs during his six innings of work, striking out seven. Bradley Zayac was tagged with the win and Cooper Harrington added a save to his ledger.

Jax State scored the first run of the game with a Greg LaChance RBI-single, plating Brady Thomas with two outs in the top of the second inning.

Liberty responded in the home half of the same inning with a two-run homer to left center field, taking a 2-1 lead after two frames.

The Gamecocks tied the game in the top of the third inning when Jaxon Pate came home on a dropped fly ball by the Liberty center fielder, tying the game at 2-2.

The score remained evened until the bottom of the sixth inning, when a solo homer would break the tie at 3-2. Shortly after, a bases-loaded walk would make the score 4-2, the eventual final.

Jax State was held to five hits on the day, the fewest since February 21, when the team was held to four hits by Toledo.

The Gamecocks will look to bounce back against the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M on Tuesday evening at Jim Case Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for. 6 p.m.
