Gamecocks Win Seventh Straight Game Against Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Jax State softball team battled seven innings in the state capital with the Alabama State Hornets on Tuesday night, picking up a 4-1 win for its seventh straight victory and second win over the Hornets this season.

While it was a slow offensive start for Jax State, the Gamecocks picked up the momentum at the midpoint of the contest, scoring three runs in the fourth to claim the lead that would be held for the rest of the night. Jax State rattled off six hits as a team compared to Alabama State's five.

Following the first two innings going scoreless, the Hornets found the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third, after an RBI single to give Alabama State its first and only lead of the day. The Gamecocks managed to respond in the fourth after a back-to-back fielding error and wild pitch resulted in Jax State's first two scores before an RBI double by Ashley Phillips to make it a 3-1 game. Additionally, designated player Amber Reed led the inning off with a single to bring her reached-base streak to 25 games.

Phillips was responsible for one of the two extra-base hits that the Gamecocks tallied throughout the evening and was one of six different Jax State batters to get a hit.

From there, both teams were held scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings as junior pitcher MacKinley Portillo continued to limit the Hornets on the base paths in the latter half of the contest.

Jax State added one final insurance run in the top of the seventh after Tea Gutierrez doubled to left center to bring home Mikayla Deville for the first extra-base hit of her collegiate career.

In the circle for the Gamecocks, Portillo pitched all seven innings against the Hornets, allowing just one run off five hits and three walks. The junior arm picked up three strikeouts throughout the evening as well for her seventh win of the year.

Jax State will hit the road for one final non-conference game tomorrow afternoon, traveling to Chattanooga to take on the Mocs at 5 p.m.
