HUNTSVILLE, Texas—Jax State wrapped up the regular season with a three-game series sweep against Sam Houston, taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader by the scores of 6-0 and 8-3.
Sophomore shortstop
Aria Davis was responsible for the first three runs of the day with a solo homer in the second and a two run double in the third.
The Gamecocks added a run in the fourth when
Emma Elrod singled up the middle to bring home
Ashley Phillips, who then hit a two-run homer to left in the fifth to cap the scoring.
Davis finished the game 3-for-4. Elrod,
Amber Reed, and Phillips all finished with two hits each.
Freshman
Makenna Moore threw a complete game shutout, fanning three and only allowing five hits and no walks over seven innings of work to improve to 15-1 on the year.
In Game 2, the Gamecocks loaded the bases in three of the first four innings, getting their first run of the game in the third on a bases-loaded walk to Phillips.
The Gamecocks hit two homers in the fourth, starting with a solo shot to left by Elrod, and a three-run blast to right by Phillips which sandwiched a two-run single to right by
Makalyn Kyser who just missed a homer to left two pitches earlier.
In the circle,
Jaliyah Holmes worked four scoreless innings allowing just one hit with three walks and three strikeouts on 61 total pitches to pick up her 17
th win of the season.
MacKinley Portillo picked up her team-leading second save of the season, working the final three innings.
Eight different players had a hit for the Gamecocks, led by two from Phillips and Nowakowski each.
The Gamecocks will head to Newark, Delaware for the Conference USA Softball Tournament where they will play on Thursday at 11 a.m. Central against an opponent that will be determined during play on Wednesday.
