Drake Medals at GMAC as Gamecocks Take Third

HOOVER, Ala.—Will Drake sunk a 30-foot birdie putt on his 53rd hole of the GMAC Invitational to claim a share of the lead and help his team finish third in the field.
Over the three-day, 54-hole tournament at Inverness Country Club, Jax State finished at one-over par with a total of 841. The Gamecocks opened with an even-par 280 on Sunday and finished one-under in Monday's round that was delayed north of three hours by lightning. During Tuesday's final round, Jax State posted a two-over round of 282, finishing seven shots behind Western Kentucky and 16 behind host and champion UAB.
Drake posted a four-under round of 66 on Sunday with a 31 on the back nine, then followed it up with a two-under 68 on Monday. He made the turn on Tuesday at two-under but bogeyed the Par 3 11th before coming back with birdies on 15 and 17 to claim a share of the individual title with a 67 in the final round.
The sophomore was second in the field in Par 4 scoring at 3.77 (-8) and was tied for second in birdies with 14.
Raphael Turcaud was 13th at -1, coming back with back-to-back rounds of 68 after a 73 to start. Turcaud was four-under in his round on Tuesday until bogeys on 13 and 17. Ben Shedd was a shot back in a tie for 17th with a two-under 68 followed by a 70 on Monday, and a 72 on Tuesday. Just before the horn sounded to suspend play on Monday, Shedd eagled the 556-yard Par 5 eighth hole and followed that up by putting his approach shot on nine within a foot, then sunk the putt after play resumed to make the turn at 34.
Finlay Hazelwood tied for 52nd with rounds of 74, 73, and 75 and was followed by Tyler Neidel in 67th with rounds of 73, 78, and 76.
Joshua Gardner competed as an individual in his debut and finished in a tie for 24th at +3 with rounds of 72, 71, and 70 and was tied for first in the field in total pars at 41.
Jax State will return to action next week at the Argent Financial Classic in Choudrant, La.
