Austin Carpenter begins his first season with the Jacksonville State baseball program, serving as a volunteer assistant coach on Jim Case’s staff.
Carpenter enters the coaching profession after playing three seasons at the University of North Alabama from 2014-2016. Prior to his three seasons in Florence, he played at Gulf Coast State College under head coach Mike Kandler.
The right-handed pitcher from Fort Payne, Alabama, turned in a solid career on the mound in the junior college ranks and at UNA. In 2013 at the Panama City, Florida-based school, he turned in a 3-2 record on the mound and pitched 28.0 innings for GCSC and averaged a strikeout per inning he pitched and allowed just nine walks.
At UNA, Carpenter appeared in 48 games over a three-year span and collected five wins as a middle relief pitcher. He tossed over 87 career innings and accumulated 75 strikeouts and walked just 25 batters. In 2014, he made 25 appearances as a junior, all in relief, which was the second most on the team. Carpenter finished his sophomore campaign with a 2-3 record and one save. As a junior, he finished the season with a 1.47 earned run average, allowing just six runs, three earned, in 18.1 innings on the mound. In his final season as a Lion, Carpenter earned a pair of wins against Gulf South Conference members Shorter and Christian Brothers. He recorded a career-high seven strikeouts on two occasions in 2016 against Stillman and Spring Hill College.
He played in the Northwoods Collegiate League during the summer of 2015. He was a member of the Duluth Huskies.
Carpenter played first base, third base and pitched at Fort Payne High School under head coach Johnny Johnson. He helped lead the Wildcats to three straight state playoff appearances from 2009-2011. Carpenter was named all-area at third base in 2010, all-area at first base in 2011, All-Area Co-Pitcher of the Year in 2011 and All-State Utility Player of the Year in 2011. He also lettered in football and a member of Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society.
He is the son of Mike and Marchita Carpenter and has one sibling.
