Garrett Skelton will serve his second season as an assistant coach with the Jax State softball program in the 2027 season.
Skelton joined the Gamecocks staff full-time in the summer of 2023 following his tenure as head manager, and after two seasons as Director of Player Development at Jax State, Skelton was promoted to assistant softball coach prior to the beginning of the 2026 season.
“Coach Garrett's loyalty to this program, his genuine care for our players, and his dedication to helping our team improve every day made this an easy decision,” said head coach Julie Boland, “I'm excited to see him thrive in this role and continue impacting our program in positive ways.”
The veteran assistant coach has been with the Gamecocks for five seasons and has seen 167 wins during the span, including a Conference USA regular season and tournament title in 2026. Skelton was a member of the softball staff in some capacity for three seasons with former head coach Jana McGinnis and worked alongside Boland as an assistant coach for the last two years. Aside from Boland, Skelton is the longest tenured full-time staffer with the Jax State softball program.
"Garrett (Skelton) has proven he is a vital piece to our softball program. He is an alumni, and after spending several seasons as our head equipment manager, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to hire him full time," said head coach Jana McGinnis during his hiring as Director of Player Development in 2024.
