MURRAY, Ky. – The Jacksonville State football team racked up 580 yards of total offense behind a career day for senior Ryan Perrilloux on Saturday to hand Murray State a 41-7 defeat on its Homecoming on Saturday afternoon.
The No. 18 Gamecocks (4-2, 2-0 Ohio Valley Conference) amassed 32 first downs, tying a school record set vs. Livingston in 1978, thanks to 254 yards rushing and 326 yards passing. It was the highest total offense output for JSU since 2004 and the highest passing output since 1999. Jax State improves to 6-1 against the Racers (1-4, 0-2 OVC) and the sixth-straight in the series.
Perrilloux completed 18 of his 29 pass attempts for a career-high 318 yards and three touchdowns to guide the Gamecocks to their fourth-straight win. He has now thrown three or more touchdowns in each of the last four weeks. He did have one interception in the third quarter, his first of the season. The pick snapped a streak of 127 straight passes for the LaPlace, La., native without an interception. He ran for 50 yards on a day that saw him pass Bobby Ray Green for seventh on the school's career passing yards list. Perrilloux finished the day with 3,597 career yards.
Sophomore Marques Ivory also succeeded in a reserve role for JSU, completing both of his pass attempts for eight yards and a touchdown.
Junior Jamal Young also enjoyed a career afternoon for the Gamecock offense, running for 72 yards on 11 carries and his first two career scoring runs. The Jackson, Miss., native and Gulf Coast Community College transfer also hauled in three passes for 49 yards and a score.
The Gamecocks made Racer quarterback Nico Yantko's third start a frustrating one, picking him off three times and holding him to 187 yards and a score on 18-for-36 passing. Junior T.J. Heath hauled in two of the three interceptions, giving the Alexandria, Ala., native five picks in the past two games. He has all but one of the team's interceptions this season, with senior Josh Cain grabbing the other on Saturday.
Senior Linebacker Alexander Henderson finished the day with a team-high 10 stops, his second-straight game with at least 10 tackles. Junior Torrey Davis led the JSU defensive front with two sacks, while senior Santez Mays grabbed one and a half in the game.
Perrilloux found nine different receivers in the game, with senior James Wilkerson grabbing four passes for 42 yards. Senior Greg Smith had 57 yards on three catches, while sophomore James Shaw had two catches for a game-high 93 yards and a score.
The Racers ran for just 65 yards on 29 carries, the 28th time an OVC foe has failed to run for 100 yards against the Gamecock defense. MSU punter Kienan Cullen shone on what was a dull day for MSU with an average of 43.8 yards on six punts. That average was sparked by a school-record 68-yard boot.
A little trickery got the Gamecock offense going on their opening drive, when a 27-yard run by sophomore Rod Byrd on a fake punt set up a seven-yard scoring run from Young. The score gave the Gamecocks a 7-0 advantage with 7:27 remaining in the first quarter.
No one would score again in the opening quarter but the Gamecocks made up for it with 21 in the second. The first came less than four minutes in on an eight-yard pass from Perrilloux to Justin Howard that gave JSU a 14-0 lead with 11:01 on the clock. Howard's third scoring catch of the year capped a three-play, 43-yard drive that took just 58 seconds.
The Gamecocks' next drive took a little longer. Sophomore Marques Ivory orchestrated a 10-play, 54-yard possession that ate 5:24 off of the clock. His three-yard touchdown pass to junior Alphonso Freeney put JSU on top 21-0 with 3:46 remaining in the half. With the catch, Freeney became the 14th JSU player to score a touchdown this season.
Jax State used another quick strike to take a 28-0 lead into the locker room at the half. Perrilloux's second touchdown pass of the game came in the form of a 66-yard strike to sophomore James Shaw. The pass tied for the longest in Perrilloux's career and was the second play of a 93-yard scoring drive that took just 18 seconds. It was the Gamecocks' eighth scoring drive of 2009 of less than 20 seconds.
The Racers pulled off somewhat of a moral victory by holding the Gamecocks scoreless in the third quarter, snapping a streak of 14 consecutive quarters in which the Gamecocks had scored.
JSU stretched the lead to 35-0 with 11:55 to play, when Young scampered 14 yards for his second score of the day. Also his second career rushing score, the run capped a 12-play, 89-yard drive that took 5:13. Young was also on the back end of the Gamecocks' final score of the day, a 34-yard screen pass from Perrilloux with 4:54 to play.
Murray finally mounted a scoring drive late in the game, a 71-yard possession that took 3:21 off of the clock. The eighth and final play of the drive was a two-yard pass from Yantko to Alex Estes with just 1:23 to play.
The Gamecocks will take a week off before returning to action on Oct. 24, when Eastern Illinois pays a visit for homecoming at Paul Snow Stadium.
