MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Blake Seguin went 3-for-4 and Jake Welch drove in four runs to lead Jacksonville State to a 10-6 win over unbeaten Middle Tennessee in college baseball on Friday.
JSU's Daniel Watts (1-0) allowed just three hits in relief to earn his first win of the season, while Mitch Miller (1) tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his first save. MTSU's Brett Smalley (0-1) threw just 10 pitches and gave up four runs and three hits to get stuck with the loss.
“We've talked about getting the big hits when we needed them and today, I thought we got them everytime we needed them,” said JSU head coach Jim Case. “We were able to extend the innings and I'm very proud of our guys.”
The Gamecocks rallied from a two-run deficit and scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn their first win of the season.

After a pair of walks, Jake Welch cleared the bases with a double to left field to score three runs and Daniel Adamson followed with a two-run home run to left field to give the Gamecocks a 9-5 lead.
The Blue Raiders threatened in each of the final three innings, but Miller was able to get out of each jam. In the seventh inning, the Blue Raiders were able to load the bases, but Miller got an inning-ending ground ball and the Gamecocks ended both the eighth and ninth innings with double plays.
“I thought we did a fantastic job of turning the double play when we got the opportunity during the game,” Case added. “We finished the game with three double plays, including one in each of the eighth and ninth innings.”
Jacksonville State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Bert Smith scored on a Blue Raider error to take the early lead.
Middle Tennessee took a 3-1 lead in the third inning on a two-RBI single by Stuart Meinhart and Taylor Dennis drove in another run for the Blue Raiders.
The Gamecocks tied the game in the fifth inning after Sam Eberle was hit by a pitch and Spencer Brandes walked and both players moved up on a wild pitch. Jake Sharrock followed with a grounder to the right side to score Eberle and Seguin singled up the middle to score Brandes and tie the game at 5-5.
Middle Tennessee pushed across two runs with two outs in the sixth inning to build a 7-5 lead after Justin Jones scored on a balk and Meinhart came across on a Gamecock error, before JSU rallied for the win.
Jacksonville State finished the game 6-for-15 and scored seven runs with two outs in the game. Adamson and Cunningham each finished with a pair of hits to go along with Seguin's three hits to lead the Gamecocks.
