TROY –
Heath Wall had three hits and drove in six runs with a pair of homeruns to lead Jacksonville State to a 9-3 win over Troy at Riddle-Pace Field on Wednesday.
JSU's
Daniel Watts (2-0) pitched three solid innings on the mound, allowed just two hits and recording a pair of strikeouts. Troy's Jeff Green (2-1) gave up six hits and six runs to get stuck with the loss for the Trojans.
The Gamecocks (11-7) pounded out 13 hits, led by Wall's three hits, while
Kyle Bluestein,
Daniel Adamson and
Jake Sharrock each added a pair of hits.
Jacksonville State, which won their fourth straight game, took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after Bluestein walked and Wall hit his first home run of the game over the left field fence.
The Gamecocks extended the lead in the top of the third inning after
Blake Seguin extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a single up the middle and then stole second. Bluestein followed with a two-out single, before
Daniel Adamson doubled in two runs down the left field line to give JSU a 4-0 lead. Wall then slapped his second home run of the game to give Jax State a 6-0 lead.
Troy (11-7) scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning when JSU relief pitcher
Malcolm Thomas hit Troy's Shohei Fujita with bases loaded to make the score 6-1, but the Gamecocks got the run back in the top of the fifth inning.
Adamson reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Wall followed with a ground rule double that bounced over the left field fence to give the Gamecocks a 7-1 lead.
The Gamecocks scored two more runs in the seventh inning when Wall drove in his fifth run of the game and Sharrock had a RBI single up the middle to give JSU a 9-1 lead.
Troy cut the lead to 9-3 in the home half of the seventh when Chad Watson hit a two-run home run for the final margin.
Jacksonville State returns to action this weekend by opening Ohio Valley Conference play at Murray State. Saturday's double-header is scheduled for 1 p.m., while Sunday's single-game will also begin at 1 p.m.
The Gamecocks have won 12 straight OVC series dating back to the final three of the 2007 season and winning all last year. As a matter of fact, JSU currently has won 14 straight OVC conference games and is three shy of the all-time record of 17, set by Eastern Illinois in 2001.
