JSU Sweeps Austin Peay to Claim 14th Straight OVC Series

JACKSONVILLE – The Gamecocks rallied in the eighth inning for a 6-5 win in the opener and junior pitcher Ben Tootle struck out 10 batters to lead Jacksonville State to a 4-0 shut-out in the second game as JSU earned an Ohio Valley Conference sweep over Austin Peay on Saturday.

Jacksonville State won its 14th straight OVC series as the Gamecocks improved to 15-9 overall and 4-1 in the conference and has now won 25 of its last 27 conference games. Austin Peay dropped to 8-16 overall and 1-4 in the OVC.

In the opener, Jordan Beistline (3-1) tossed 1 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit to earn his third win of the season. Bill Henke recorded the final two outs to earn his fifth save . APSU's Ricky Marshall (2-2) pitched just 2/3 inning, but allowed the game winning run to get stuck with the loss.

The Governors built a 5-0 lead after scoring a run in the second, two in the third and fourth inning to jump out to the early lead, but the Gamecocks got on the board in the home half of the fourth inning.

Heath Wall had a one-out single and Spencer Brandes followed with a walk. Jake Sharrock had a RBI single to center field to score Wall and cut the lead to 5-1.

Todd Cunningham walked to load the bases and Blake Seguin followed with a three-RBI double off the left field fence to cut the lead to 5-4.

Jax State tied the game in the seventh inning on a RBI single by Sam Eberle, before Todd Cunningham scored on an infield grounder by Jay Davis to give the Gamecocks their fourth final at-bat win of the season.

Cunningham, Seguin and Kyle Bluestein each had two hits to lead the Gamecocks' 11-hit attack, while Seguin drove in a game-high three runs.

Trey Lucas went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lead Austin Peay at the plate.

In the second game, Tootle (3-1) allowed just three hits with his 10 strikeouts to earn his fourth career complete-game and third career shut-out. APSU's Stephen Huff (0-3) finished with seven strikeouts and three hits, but got stuck with the loss.

Jax State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a RBI single by Daniel Adamson, and a two-RBI double by Heath Wall to give Tootle all the runs he would need. Tootle faced just four batter above the minimum in his home pitching debut.

The Gamecocks added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Bluestein for the final margin.

Adamson finished 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Jax State in the night cap, while Jared Delong, Brooks Hunton and Lucas each had one hit for the Govs.

Jacksonville State has now won eight straight games at Rudy Abbott Field vs the Govs and will go for the series sweep on Sunday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and can be heard on the JSU Radio Network.
