JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams each earned 7-0 victories over Alabama State on Friday at the JSU Tennis Courts. The Gamecock men improved to 9-1 on the season while the women are 7-2.
JSU claimed all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Bernardo Bachino and Gustavo Holz defeated Denys Alyeksyeyeu and Ian Burt, 8-1 at No. 1 doubles while Brian Kenyon and Thomas Bellman won over Roddrick Ivory and Quintero Moore, 8-3 at No. 2. The Gamecocks won No.3 doubles by default.
Bachino defeated Alyeksyeyeu at the No. 1 singles position, 6-3, 6-1, and Gustavo Holz downed Burt, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. Justin Andrews earned his first win of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Clifford Frazier at No. 3 while Brian Ingram earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Ivory at No. 4. Emil Loeken defeated Moore, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and Brian Kenyon was awarded the win by default at No. 6.
Like the men, the JSU women claimed the doubles point with two wins and a default. Viviani Marani and Rafaila Wenzel teamed for an 8-3 win over Sheniece Rawlins and Safiya Taylor at No.1 doubles. Martina Dessbesell and Eloah Lopes defeated Shameka Williams and Tavera Fleming, 8-0, at No. 2.
Marani defeated Rawlins 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Dessbesell, Wenzel, Renesto and Lopes made quick work at No. 2 through No. 5, claiming 6-0, 6-0 victories while Kristen Fuller won at No. 6 by default.
Jacksonville State's men will host the University of Buffalo while the women will play Southeast Missouri State at the JSU Tennis Courts on Sunday at 10 a.m.
