Gamecocks Spoil Kennesaw Rally, Claim 4-2 Win

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Jacksonville State softball team was able to overcome a late Kennesaw State rally on Tuesday to pull of a 4-2 win and extend its winning streak to 14 games.

Freshman Kaycee Crow went 2-for-4 to record the first multi-hit game of her career to lift the Gamecocks (31-9) to their seventh-straight win on the road. The Ringold, Ga., native doubled off of the top of the wall in center in the second and roped a single to center in the seventh that led to the go-ahead run after the Owls (19-26) rallied from down 2-0 to tie it in the home half of the sixth.

Senior Allie Barker went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored for the Gamecock offense. Five other players scattered a hit apiece in the team's 14th-straight victory, which is the second-longest active streak in the nation.

On a night where five Gamecocks pitched, senior Karla Pittman (12-1) started the game and then earned the win in relief in the circle. The North Canton, Ohio, native pitched the first inning and then the last two while holding KSU to no runs on two hits, while striking out two and walking two. She has now won her last 10 decisions.

Seniors Melissa Dowling and Kayla Collins and junior Kelly McGregoreach pitched hitless frames, while sophomore Ashley Eliasson allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in her inning of work.

The Gamecocks got a run in the fourth, when Allie Barker, who led off the inning with a double, scored on a single up the middle from Kayla Collins. They stretched the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth, when Barker's one-out single drove in Chrissy O'Neal from second.

The Owls cut their deficit in half in the home half of the fifth, thanks to a home run by Brittany Moore that curled just inside the foul pole in left. The homer was the first in her career and marked the first earned run scored on the Gamecocks since April 11 and snapped a streak of 30 2/3 frames for the JSU staff without allowing an earned run.

The Owls loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth and Pittman nearly got the Gamecocks out of the jam before issuing a two-out walk to Jamie Kekaualua to plate pinch runner Erica Joseph to tie the game at 2-2.

JSU reclaimed the lead in the seventh, thanks to a single up the middle from Crow and the second fielding miscue by center fielder Lyndsay McCurry that allowed junior Nikki Prier to score from second. Barker moved to third on the error and later scored on a Catherine Tarvin wild pitch to stretch the JSU lead to 4-2.

Pittman closed the door on the Owls in the seventh to hand them the loss.

Tarvin (5-10) took the loss in the circle for Kennesaw State after allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits in 2.2 innings of relief work. She struck out two and walked a pair in relief of April Harper, who allowed two runs on seven hits in her 4.1 innings in the circle.

The Gamecocks will return home on Thursday, when they host Ole Miss at University Field in a 4 p.m. single game. Admission is free for all fans, and the game will be carried live on the JSU Radio Network.
