MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State softball team closed its non-conference schedule on Tuesday afternoon, when the Gamecocks split a doubleheader at Middle Tennessee by dropping the opener in 10 innings and winning the nightcap.
The Gamecocks (36-10) had the nation's longest winning streak snapped at 18 games in the first game of the day, when the Blue Raiders (14-32) were able to put a run across in the bottom of the 10th to earn the 6-5 win. It was JSU's first loss since March 21. The Gamecocks bounced back in the finale to claim a 9-5 win and a split on the day.
In the second game, The Gamecocks were forced to overcome a 2-0 deficit after two innings and did so by plating one in the third and eight over the final three frames. Junior
Chrissy O'Neal went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI to lead a 13-hit effort from the JSU offense. Junior
Hillary Downs added a solo home run in a 2-for-3 effort to aide the Gamecock offense.

Kayla Collins (2-1) earned the win in the circle after allowing a run on one hit in four innings of relief work. The Niceville, Fla., native struck out five and walked one in relief of senior
Melissa Dowling, who gave up four runs on six hits in her three frames.
Lindsey VanderLugt (11-17) was tagged with the loss in the game after surrendering six runs on seven hits in three innings in the circle. Kellie Head started the game and gave up three ruins on six hits in four innings. Martha Davis went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the MTSU offense.
In the opener, the Blue Raiders jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first, only to watch the Gamecocks tie the game in the fourth and take the lead on a Downs sacrifice fly in the sixth. MTSU tied it up again in the bottom of the sixth and was able to break the tie on a Caitlin McClure single in the home half of the 10th.
Senior
Allie Barker went 3-for-4 at the plate in the opening game, while four players scattered the other of the Gamecocks' seven hits in the game.
VanderLugt went the distance to earn the win in the game, allowing three runs on seven hits in the 10 innings of work. Sophomore
Ashley Eliasson (14-5) suffered the defeat after giving up two unearned runs on one hit in 4.2 innings of relief. Senior
Karla Pittman, who started the game for JSU, slowed four runs on nine hits in five innings.
The Gamecocks will wrap up the 2009 regular season this weekend with a three-game series against Morehead State at University Field. The series will start with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday before concluding with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Gamecocks will debut and dedicate their new scoreboard prior to the start of Saturday's game. Admission is free for all fans.
