GAME NOTES
Jacksonville State returns to the diamond with a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at first-place Southeast Missouri State this weekend. Saturday's double-header will begin at 1 p.m., while Sunday's single-game will also start at 1 p.m.
The Gamecocks enter the series with a 15-10 overall record and are tied for third place in the OVC with a 4-2 conference mark following last week's series win over Austin Peay. Southeast Missouri State has a 16-9 overall mark and a perfect 6-0 OVC mark after sweeping UT Martin last week.
Jax State has won 14 straight OVC series, dating back to the 2007 season, where the Gamecocks won the final three series and every series last season. JSU has won both of its series this year and the 14 straight is believed to an OVC record.
JSU freshman Tanner Freshour will make his first career conference start against SEMO's Kyle Gumieny in the opener on Saturday. Freshour has a 0-1 record with a 3.45 ERA in 31 1/3 innings on the mound, while Guminey has a 1-2 record with a 6.21 ERA.
All-American Ben Tootle is slated to start the second game on Saturday. Tootle, who was named the OVC Pitcher of the Week on Monday, has a 4-1 record this season with a 2.20 ERA with 41 strikeouts. SEMO will counter with senior James Leigh, who has posted a 4-0 mark with a 3.16 ERA.
Jax State has won five of the last six meetings vs Southeast, including a three-game OVC sweep over the Redhawks last season.
