JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville State softball team returns home for the first time in over three weeks this weekend, when the Gamecocks welcome Southeast Missouri to University Field for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series. The two will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday before wrapping up the set with a single game at the same time on Sunday.
Jacksonville State (21-9, 6-1 OVC) has won its last four games and nine of its last 11 after sweeping a rain-shortened two-game series at UT Martin on Sunday. JSU welcomes a Redhawks (12-12, 3-3 OVC) team that has lost four in a row.
This weekend's series will extend an all-time series that has seen JSU win each of the previous 18 meetings, including a 7-0 record at University Field. The series started with a non-conference game in 2002 and has seen 17 meetings since the Gamecocks joined the OVC. The two have met twice in the OVC Tournament.
The Gamecocks posted a 4-0 record last week, thanks in large part to the impressive performances that juniors Chrissy O'Neal and Nikki Prier put together. O'Neal, a native of Dallas, Ga., was named the OVC's Player of the Week on Monday after batting .429 with three home runs, a double, two triples and six RBI during the week. She scored a team-high eight runs in the four-game stretch that saw her hit safely, score and drive in a run in each game.
Prier, a native of Raleigh, N.C., arguably had as good a week as O'Neal after she hit a team-best .467 with two homers, a double and five RBI. In OVC play this season, Prier is batting .417, which is second only to senior Allie Barker's .435 average. Prier's .46 doubles per game ranks second nationally.
The Redhawks are led by Nicole Troncoso, who's .385 batting average ranks fourth in the OVC. Giana Zimmerman has been the leader for the SEMO pitching staff, compiling a 7-4 record and a team-best 2.11 earned run average.
