TUSCALOOSA – Kent Matthes slugged his 26th homer of the season as No. 10 Alabama rallied for an 8-4 win over Jacksonville State on Tuesday.
David Head (1-3) pitched 4 1/3 innings and had five strikeouts to earn his first career win for the Crimson Tide. JSU's Tanner Freshour (2-3) gave up four runs and four hits in 2 1/3 innings to suffer the loss for the Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks (28-21) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Todd Cunningham and Blake Seguin both scored on wild pitches in the top of the first inning, but Alabama tied the game in the home half when Matthes hit a two-run homer down the left field line.
Jax State answered in the top of the second inning and took a 3-2 lead when Andrew Edge hit the first of two home runs to give the Gamecocks the lead.
Alabama (36-15) tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth inning when Brandon May led off the inning with a solo home run and Alabama took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Taylor Dugas scored on a wild pitch, Matthes drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Ross Wilson scored on a Gamecock throwing error as Alabama built a 6-3 lead.
The Crimson Tide pushed the lead to 7-3 in the sixth inning when Alex Kubal hit a solo homer to left field.
Jax State scored its final run in the seventh when Edge hit his second home run of the night, a solo shot over the left field wall, to cut the lead to 7-4. Alabama added an insurance run in the eighth inning for the final margin.
Jake Sharrock and Edge each finished with a pair of hits to lead the Gamecocks, while Dugas, Wilson and May each had two hits for the Crimson Tide.
Jacksonville State returns to action in its final home series of the year this weekend against Tennessee-Martin. Friday's double-header will begin at 1 p.m., while Saturday's single-game will also begin at 1 p.m. at Rudy Abbott Field.
