JACKSONVILLE – Wes Patterson went 6-for-8 as Tennessee-Martin claimed an Ohio Valley Conference sweep over Jacksonville State by winning 11-7 in the opener and 17-2 in the night cap.
UTM improves to 19-31 overall and 8-15 in the OVC, while the Gamecocks drop to 28-23 and 10-12. Jacksonville State can still make next week's Ohio Valley Conference Championship with a win on Saturday or a loss by Eastern Kentucky.
Brendan Lozupone (3-3) scattered eight hits in 6 1/3 innings on the mound to earn the win for the Skyhawks, while JSU's Daniel Watts (4-5) gave up five runs and walked three to suffer the loss.
The Skyhawks took a 4-0 lead in the second inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double by Jordan Owen, but the Gamecocks cut into the lead in the third inning.
Todd Cunningham had a two-RBI triple and Kyle Bluestein drove in another run to slice the lead to 4-3.
UTM pushed the lead to 5-3 in the fourth inning after Jordan Owen led off with a solo homerun, but the Gamecocks answered in the home half of the fourth when Andrew Edge slapped his ninth home run of the season to make the score 5-4.
The Skyhawks scored two in the fifth, thanks to a RBI single by Drew Mason and a sacrifice fly by Owen, but JSU pushed across a run on a RBI single by Bluestein to make it 8-5 in the home half of the inning.
Tennessee-Martin added a run in the sixth on a RBI single by Patterson to make it 9-5, but Heath Wall scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-6.
UTM plated three runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Ty Nelson, while JSU scored its final run in the ninth on a RBI single by Cunningham for the final margin.
Nelson and Terry each had three hits, while Patterson and Owen had two hits each for UT Martin, while Blake Seguin had three hits to lead the Gamecocks at the plate.
In the second game, the Skyhawks jumped out to a 12-1 lead in the first four innings and Coty Green allowed just seven hits on the mound to earn the complete-game win.
