JACKSONVILLE – Tennessee-Martin got only four hits and scored a pair of unearned runs to claim a 3-2 win over Jacksonville State to sweep the Ohio Valley Conference series at Rudy Abbott Field on Saturday.
Jacksonville State (28-24, 10-13) advances to next week's Ohio Valley Conference Championship as the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 seed Morehead State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. UT Martin ends its season with a 20-31 record and 9-15 in the OVC.
UTM's Travis Webb allowed just five hits and one run to earn his first win of the season. JSU's Ben Tootle (3-4) allowed just two hits in seven innings on the mound to get stuck with the loss.
The Skyhawks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning after Jordan Owen reached on a Gamecock throwing error and Kevin Holt walked. Both players moved up on a passed ball and UTM scored its first run on an infield grounder by Cody Terry. Scott Gladstone then hit a deep fly to centerfield that scored Holt.
Jax State scored a run in the home half of the sixth after Todd Cunningham had a one-out triple to right center and Blake Seguin followed with a RBI single to left center to cut the lead to 2-1.
Tennessee-Martin added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on a RBI single by Miles Hartsfield as the Skyhawks took a 3-1 lead.
JSU's Sam Eberle hit a two-out solo home run to center field to cut the lead to 3-2, but Drew Flaniken recorded the final out to earn his second save of the year for the Skyhawks and end the Gamecock threat.
Kyle Bluestein and Cunningham each had a pair of hits to lead the Gamecocks at the plate, while Cody Terry, Mark Hartsfield, West Patterson and Miles Hartsfield each had a hit for UTM.
