PADUCAH, Ky. – Junior Austin Lucas scattered four hits in eight solid innings on the mound as sixth-seed Jacksonville State cruised to a 9-0 shutout over third-seed Morehead State in the opening round of the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championship on Wednesday.
The Gamecocks snapped an eight-game losing skid to improve to 29-24 on the season to advance to face top-seed Eastern Illinois. Morehead State drops to 19-31 overall and will now face Southeast Missouri State in an elimination game on Thursday.
Lucas (7-3) faced the Eagles twice and allowed just nine hits and zero runs in 14 shutout innings this season after posting a 2-0 record. The Alabaster, Ala., native threw 90 pitches to earn his seventh win of the season for the Gamecocks. Tyler Bess (5-7) gave up nine runs and 10 hits to suffer the loss for Morehead State.
“I thought Austin did an outstanding job of mixing things up on the mound tonight,” said JSU head coach Jim Case. “He didn't fall behind on hitters and I thought his experience really showed up tonight. We needed someone to go out and throw up zero's on the board and that's exactly what he did.”
The Gamecocks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Todd Cunningham extended his hitting streak to seven games with a solo home run down the right field line.
Jax State then scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning on four hits and three Morehead State errors to take control of the game.
Sam Eberle had a two-RBI double and Kyle Bluestein drove in another run during the inning, while Blake Seguin and Eberle each scored on Morehead errors as the Gamecocks built a 6-0 lead.
Andrew Edge extended the lead with a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning, while Jake Sharrock had a two-out, two-RBI single in the seventh inning for the final margin.
Daniel Adamson, Cunningham and Eberle each finished with a pair of hits as the Gamecocks finished the game with 11. Daniel Pugh had two of Morehead's six hits in the game.
Jax State will face Eastern Illinois for the fourth time this season at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Gamecocks won two of the three meetings this season, claiming a 13-3 win and a 10-5 win back in the middle of April. The game can be heard on the JSU Radio Network with live stats available at JSUGamecockSports.com.
