JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team will be showing its support for Breast Cance Awareness Month when the Gamecocks take the floor against Murray State and Southeast Missouri at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Gamecocks will be attempting to Paint the Pete Pink on Friday at 6 p.m. against Murray State and again at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Southeast Missouri. Admission is free to both matches and JSU is asking all fans to wear their pink to both matches in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is every October. Over the weekend, the Gamecocks will be giving free pizza to all JSU student organizations that are in attendance. If your organization plans to attend, please contact assistant coach Morgan Salow at 256-782-5754 or at msalow@jsu.edu so that arrangements can be made to provide pizza.
On the floor, the Gamecocks are looking to get things going as they head down the home stretch of the 2011 conference schedule. With just eight matches remaining and only four at home, JSU is looking to gain some ground in the Ohio Valley Conference race. Friday's match is a rematch from a Sept. 24 match at Murray State in which the Gamecocks rallied to pull off a 3-2 win over the Racers, while JSU will be looking to avenge a 3-1 loss at Southeast Missouri on Saturday.
Also, senior outside hitter Lauren Harkins seeks to make more history in a JSU uniform. In her first season as a hitter after spending three years as the team's libero, the Louisville, Ky., native is already the Gamecocks' career digs leader and is closing in on becoming the first player in JSU history and only the seventh in OVC history to record 2,000 digs in a career. After a season-high 27 digs last week against SIU-Edwardsville, Harkins currently has 1,996 and sits in eighth place on the conference's career list.
Harkins was also a force for the JSU offense the last time out, thanks to a career-high 13 kills that led to the first double-double of her four-year career. Fellow Senior Stephanie Koontz leads the way for the JSU offense on the season, averaging 2.95 kills per set on a .295 attack percentage.
