JACKSONVILLE – Things got back to normal for the Jacksonville State volleyball team on Friday night and the results were a historical 3-1 (25-20, 25-14, 22-25, 25-22) win over Murray State at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Gamecocks (7-16, 5-8 Ohio Valley Conference) had their entire roster healthy for the first time since a 3-2 win at Murray State on Sept. 24 and it showed. JSU cruised to wins in the first two sets and held on to claim the season sweep of the Racers (5-18, 5-7 OVC). Senior Lauren Harkins also made history for the Gamecocks, becoming the first player in school history and just the eighth in OVC history to record 2,000 digs in a career.
The Louisville, Ky., native returned to a familiar spot, playing as the team's libero for the first time this season. The Gamecocks' libero for the first three seasons of her career had played the outside hitter so far in 2011 but returned to her familiar position on Friday and picked up where she left off in 2010. She led all players with 24 digs and paced a JSU defense that limited the Racers to a .183 attack percentage.
Also on the defensive end, JSU blocked a season-high 14 Murray State attacks, thanks to six from senior Stephanie Koontz. The Edwardsburg, Mich., native also played a big part in a dominant offensive night for JSU as one of three players with double figures in kills, all of which hit at least .475.
Koontz hit .476 on her 21 attacks, while senior Liza Senenkova and junior Hivya Leite each led the way with 17 kills. Senenkova, a native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, hit .552 on just 29 swings, while Leite, a Cabedelo, Brazil, native, posted a .481 attack percentage.
Freshman Alina Agamy notched a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs and joined Harkins as the only two Gamecocks with 10 or more digs. Sophomore Abbey Heredia dished 29 assists for the Gamecocks.
Harkins runs her career digs total to 2,020, which puts her in seventh place on the OVC's career list.
The Racers got 16 kills from Cassy Wolverton and 14 digs from Kayleah Sauer.
JSU will wrap up its four-match homestand on Saturday, when the Gamecocks host Southeast Missouri at 2 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Admission is free.
