JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team will wrap up the 2011 regular season this weekend at Pete Mathews Coliseum, where the Gamecocks will host a pair of crucial Ohio Valley Conference matches against Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky.
The weekend will get underway Friday with a 5 p.m. match against regular-season champion Morehead State, starting a doubleheader with the JSU men's basketball team, who will open its regular season at 8 p.m. against Miles College. Admission is free to the volleyball match and fans that attend can stay for the basketball game for free. The Gamecocks will then wrap up the weekend on Saturday at 2 p.m., when they host Eastern Kentucky for Senior Day.
The Gamecocks (10-18, 8-10 OVC) enter their final two matches in a three-way tie for the sixth and final spot in next week's OVC Tournament, which will be held in Morehead, Ky. JSU is currently tied with Murray State and Austin Peay for sixth place, two teams that will wrap up the season against each other on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Murray, Ky.
The trio trails fifth-place EKU by just one game and fourth-place Southeast Missouri by two games.
This weekend will mark the final matches in Pete Mathews Coliseum for three JSU seniors, as middle blockers Stephanie Koontz and Liza Senenkova and libero Lauren Harkins will play their final home matches in a Gamecock uniform.
Koontz, a native of Edwardsburg, Mich., Harkins, a Louisville, Ky., native, have been a part of history in their four years at JSU, guiding the Gamecocks to unprecedented heights two years ago by winning the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament match against Florida A&M. Senenkova, a Tashkent, Uzbekistan, native that transferred to JSU from Blinn College in Texas prior to last season, has emerged as one of the top front row players in the OVC as a senior.
