JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team jumped on the regular season champs on Friday night, but Morehead State battled back and left Pete Mathews coliseum with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-17) win in Ohio Valley Conference action.
The Gamecocks (10-19, 8-11 OVC) hit .359 in an opening set that saw them lead from wire-to-wire, but the Eagles (23-6, 18-1 OVC) put it together from there. After pulling out a back-and-forth second set that saw 10 ties, they led most of the final two sets to pull out the win.
Senior Liza Senenkova led the Gamecocks on the front row with 13 kills and six blocks. In her final weekend at Pete Mathews Coliseum, the Tashkent, Uzbekistan, native committed just two attack errors and hit .367, while getting a hand on six of JSU's 12.0 team blocks.
Fellow senior Stephanie Koontz and junior Hivya Leite each added 10 kills for the Gamecocks, while Leite picked up 10 digs for a double-double. Senior Lauren Harkins led the back row with 17 digs, and freshman Alina Agamy pitched in eight digs to go along with five kills, four blocks and 21 assists.
The Eagles turned to Aryn Bohannon, who rolled to 24 kills on a .476 attack percentage, while also adding 16 digs on the defensive side of the net. She was one of four Eagles with double figures in kills and three with 10 or more digs. The MSU defense was paced by Leslie Schellhaas' 25 digs.
The Gamecocks will wrap up their regular season on Saturday, when they host Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m. on Senior Day at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The team's three seniors will be honored prior to the match. JSU needs a win on Saturday to have a shot at next week's six-team Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, which will be held in Morehead, Ky.
