Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team ran into a Samford three-point barrage on Wednesday night at the Pete Hanna Center as the Bulldogs posted a 73-40 win.
The loss was Jax State's third-straight as it fell to 2-6 on the season. Samford, the defending Southern Conference Champions, pushed its early-season mark to 4-2. The Bulldogs have now won 16 games in the 29-game series between the two former conference rivals and winners of the last five match ups.
JSU entered the contest ranked as the top team in the Ohio Valley Conference in defending the three-point shot. Opponents were hitting 3.7 treys per contest through the first seven games. The Bulldogs finished the game 26-of-60 (43%) from the field and draining 16-of-30 (53%) from behind the arc. The 16 made three-pointers set a new program mark for Samford and matched a Southern Conference record for three-pointers in a game. SU turned in 10-of-15 treys in the opening half.
After the Gamecocks controlled the game's first 13 minutes and led by as many as eight points at 19-11 with 12:54 to go in the half and held a 27-22 lead at the 7:05 mark of the half. From that point on, the Bulldogs found their outside shooting touch scorching the nets from behind the line. SU put together a 21-2 scoring run to close out the final seven minutes thanks to hot shooting from behind the three-point arc as SU hit four consecutive three-pointers to take its first lead of the half at 28-27 with 3:44 left. The Bulldogs extended the lead with three more treys down the final seven minutes to take a 14-point, 43-29 lead into the halftime break.
It continued to rain treys in the Pete Hanna Center as Samford put together a 30-11 second half output to cruise to the 33-point win over the Red and White. Over the final 27 minutes of the game, the Bulldogs out-scored the Gamecocks, 51-13. It marks the second-worst lost to the Bulldogs in the series that dates back to the 1998 season. The Bulldogs topped JSU, 82-46, in the first match up of 2006.
Turnovers continue to plague Jax State as the Bulldogs forced 23 turnovers, while only turning the ball over just nine times in the game. JSU hit 10-of-23 from the field in the second half and just three made baskets in the final 20 minutes.

Briana Morrow turned in her third double-double of the season and the second in as many games with a team-best ten points and 11 rebounds in her 33 minutes of floor action, which matches her season-high for playing time. Freshman

Amanda McCarthy added eight points each. Cantrell, making her first career start, matched her season high with her point total. McCarthy's eight points was a season-best for the Boston, Mass.-native. Freshman
Kaitlynn Pacholke was inserted into the line up for the first time in her young collegiate career.
Junior
Danielle Vaughn, who ranked second in NCAA Division I Women's Basketball in field goal shooting percentage coming into the game, chipped in four points off the bench.
Samford's Paige Anderson, a native of Spring Garden, Ala., led all scorers with 13 points. She connected on 4-of-6 from three-point range. Jazmine Powers finished with 12 points along with six assists and credited with six steals. Taylor Reece and Ruth Ketcham carded 11 points in the win.
Jax State continues its week against in-state rivals as it welcomes nemesis Troy to Pete Mathews Coliseum on Sunday, Dec. 4. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. Free pizza will be available to the first 200 JSU students in attendance at Sunday's contest.
