FINAL STATS
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team's season ended the way most of its games went on Saturday night, when Tennessee Tech battled back to hand the Gamecocks a 77-75 loss at the Eblen Center.
In a season that saw the Gamecocks (5-25, 3-15 Ohio Valley Conference) play 23 games that were decided by 10 points or less, nine of those decided by four or fewer, the finale went the same way. Playing without leading scorer and rebounder Nick Murphy, who sat out his final career game with a knee injury suffered in last week's loss to Eastern Michigan, JSU turned elsewhere for its offensive support and got double figures from four players.
Junior Stephen Hall led JSU with 18 points, while junior B.J. Miller and freshman Brian Williams added 16 and 13, respectively, against the Golden Eagles (18-11, 12-6 OVC). Also playing in the final game of his career, senior Jeremy Bynum mustered 11 points on a night that saw him struggle from the floor.
The Oxford, Ala., native was 4-for-12 from the field, 3-for-8 from behind the arc, to close his career with 1,158 points, third in the school's Div. I history, and a JSU Div. I record 229 successful 3-point attempts. Murphy, a Bronx, N.Y., native, closes his career as the school's Div. I record holder in career points, rebounds, field goals, free throws and steals, while his 1,498 career points are fourth in JSU's all-time record book.
TTU's Kevin Murphy took control of the game in the second half, when he went 7-for-11 from the floor for 17 of his game-high 25 points. He also went 6-for-8 from the line to help the Golden Eagles take advantage of a 13-6 advantage in fouls called in their favor in the final 20 minutes.
JSU forced 13 TTU turnovers and made the most of them, turning them into a 22-9 advantage in points off turnovers, but a 28-16 advantage in the paint by TTU was largely impacted by a 41-28 advantage on the glass.
The Gamecocks jumped on the Golden Eagles early, thanks to some hot shooting from the outside. They went 5-for-9 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes to lead the entire first half and were up by as many as eight before taking a 35-32 lead into the halftime locker room.
Hall led all scorers with 12 first-half points, thanks to a 4-for-6 effort from the floor in the first 20 minutes. Bynum added eight, while Miller and Williams pitched in five apiece.
The Golden Eagles slowly cut into the slim JSU lead before a Jud Dillard lay up with 14:15 remaining put them up 47-45, their first lead of the night. TTU led by as many as five with just under 10 minutes to play to set up a 14-4 Gamecock run that gave them a 65-60 lead with six minutes remaining.
JSU pushed its lead to 70-63 with just under five minutes on the clock, but the Golden Eagles had another run in them. They scored the next nine to cut JSU's lead to one before a Miller jumper ended the run to put the Gamecocks up by three again at 72-69.
TTU made its final push from that point, getting a lay in from Murphy and a trey from Zac Swansey with 37 seconds to play that put the home team up for good.
