FINAL STATS
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team's comeback attempt came up just short in a 78-72 loss to Morehead State in Ohio Valley Conference action at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
In a game in which they trailed by as many as 22 and as much as 21 in the second half, the Gamecocks (4-19, 2-10 OVC) battled back to draw as close as four in the final minute. The Eagles (16-8, 8-4 OVC) were able to hold on, however, going to the line and making five of their six free throws in the game's final 40 seconds.
JSU, who had been led in the points column by seniors Nick Murphy and Jeremy Bynum and junior Stephen Hall in all but one of its first 22 outings this season, turned to a trio of newcomers for production. Freshman Brian Williams led the Gamecocks with 19 points and dished five assists, while fellow freshman Frankie Bougher and junior B.J. Miller each added 14 for JSU. The trio was the key to the Gamecocks' comeback attempt, scoring 35 of the team's 50 second-half points and going a combined 9-for-13 from behind the arc in the game's final 20 minutes.
The trio paced a group of five JSU players in double figures that featured Murphy's 12 points and Hall's 11. Murphy, a senior from Bronx, N.Y., scored all of his points in the final half after playing just six first-half minutes because of foul trouble. Hall, a junior from Birmingham, Ala., had eight of his 11 in the first half.
The star of the night shone inside, where Morehead State senior Kenneth Faried grabbed 20 rebounds and scored 21 points. The output was the OVC's Preseason Player of the Year's third 20-20 game of the year and only the fifth in the nation. With just four boards fewer than JSU had as a team, he passed Ralph Samson into fourth on the NCAA's all-time rebounding list, just one shy of Malik Rose in third.
For JSU, its newcomers stepped up and almost pulled off the comeback, thanks to three 3-pointers apiece from Williams, Bougher and Miller. Williams, a guard from Lawrenceville, Ga., connected on all three of his trey attempts in the second half, while Memphis, Tenn., native Bougher and Miller, of Hinesville, Ga., each went 3-for-5.
Demonte Harper led all scorers with 25 points for MSU, while Ty Proffitt's 4-for-6 night from behind the arc accounted for much of his 17 points.
The Eagles jumped on JSU out of the gates, using a 15-0 run late in the first half to turn a 20-13 lead into a 35-13 advantage with five minutes to play before the intermission. JSU got as close as 17 before the break and trailed 39-22 at the intermission.
MSU stretched the lead to 21 and maintained that for the first four minutes of the second half before the Gamecocks started to climb back in it. They scored the next 12 to start an 18-4 run that got them within seven at 52-45 with just under 12 minutes to play. That run saw JSU go 7-of-8 from the floor with Bougher pouring in 11 and Williams five.
The Eagles answered to pull back out by 13 with 7:29 on the clock and held an 11-point advantage until the 1:45 mark in the game, when the first of two-straight Miller triples set up another by Williams that cut the score to 73-69 with 59 ticks remaining.
After three MSU free throws, Williams connected from behind the arc again to pull back to within four with 24 second remaining, but that would be as close as JSU would get.
The Gamecocks will play their second of a three-game homestand on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., when they welcome Eastern Kentucky to Pete Mathews Coliseum.
