
UAB Rallies for 6-1 Win Over Jax State

BIRMINGHAM – Jamal Austin went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead UAB to a 6-1 win over Jacksonville State at Young Memorial Field on Tuesday.
Trey Waltman (1-1) earned the win in relief for UAB, while Chase Smith (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing five runs in just 2/3 of an inning for the Gamecocks.
The Blazers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a RBI single by Austin, but the Gamecocks answered in the top of the sixth inning after Jake Sharrock reached on a one-out walk and came around to score on a RBI single by Sam Eberle to tie the game at 1-1.
The Blazers took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh inning after Gamecock starter Aaron Elias pitched six solid innings, recording a career-high six strikeouts and allowing only four hits and no earned runs.
Chase Smith came in to start the seventh inning, but gave up five runs with two walks and allowed three hits to suffer his first loss of the year. Keith DePew had a RBI single, before the Blazers loaded the bases and DePew came in to score on a Smith wild pitch to give UAB a 3-1 lead.
Austin followed with two RBI double down the left field line and Patrick Palmeiro followed with a RBI single to give the Blazers a 6-1 lead.
Ryan Nance came in to pitch the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four, to secure the win for UAB.
Eberle extended his hitting streak to six games for the Gamecocks with a single in the sixth inning. Kyle Bluestein, Erik Underwood and Coty Blanchard each recorded a hit for Jax State.
Jacksonville State returns to action with a four-game series against Harvard this weekend. Friday's single-game begins at 3 p.m., with Saturday's double-header scheduled for 1 p.m., and Sunday's single game will start at 12 noon, at Rudy Abbott Field.
