
Jordan Beistline Pitches Gamecocks to 3-1 Win Over Southern Illinois

JACKSONVILLE – Jordan Beistline scattered four hits over six innings to lead Jacksonville State to a 3-1 win over Southern Illinois in the first game of a three-game series on Friday.
Jax State improves to 9-3 on the season, which is the best start for the Gamecocks under Jim Case and the best start to open a season since opening the 2000 season with a 9-2 mark.
Beistline improved to 3-0 on the season, while Todd Hornsby recorded the final three outs to earn his fourth save of the year. Cameron Maldonado gave up nine hits, but had five strikeouts to get stuck with the loss for SIU.
The Gamecocks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after Ben Waldrip reached on a one-out single and Kyle Bluestein followed with a double to right center. Waldrip scored on a Jake Sharrock sacrifice fly to give JSU the early lead.
Jax State extended the lead in the fifth inning, thanks to a two-RBI double by Sam Eberle as the Gamecocks built a 3-0 lead.
Southern Illinois scored its only run of the day on a RBI single by Jordan Sivertsen, before Hornsby came in to record the final three outs with runners on second and third to end the game and give the Gamecocks their fifth straight win.
Coty Blanchard, Eberle and Sharrock each had a pair of hits to lead the Gamecocks at the plate. Blake Pinnon and Chris Murphy had two hits each for Southern Illinois.
The two teams will play the second game of the three game series at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Rudy Abbott Field.
