JACKSONVILLE – Junior Sam Eberle slugged a three-run home run in the sixth inning to lead Jacksonville State to a 4-1 win over Southern Illinois as the Gamecocks won the series over the Salukis on Saturday.
Junior Hunter Rivers (2-0) had six strikeouts in the final 3 2/3 innings to earn the win. The Harvest, Ala., native struck out six of the last eight batters to help the Gamecocks improve to 10-3 on the season. Cody Forsythe (2-2) gave up all four runs and allowed eight hits to suffer the loss.
Jax State has now won six straight series, dating back to last season, and is off to the best start under Jim Case with a 10-3 record.
Southern Illinois (4-9) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Blake Pinnon scored on a Taylor Sparks wild pitch, but the Gamecocks tied the game in the third inning.
Andrew Bishop led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Steven Bartlett. Cody Blanchard followed with a two-out double down the left field line to score Bishop and tie the game at 1-1.
The Salukis threatened in the sixth inning after Jordan Sivertsen led off with a double and moved to third on a deep ball to right field. Rivers then came into the game and got Donny Duschinsky to ground out to shortstop and Wes Neece popped out to the catcher to end the threat.
Jax State took the lead in the sixth inning after Blake Seguin had a one-out single to right center and Matt McLaughlin followed with a single to right center, before Eberle hit the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for the game winning hit.
Blanchard and Stephen Bartlett each had a pair of hits to lead Jax State, while Sivertsen had two hits to lead the Salukis.
The two teams will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Rudy Abbott Field.
