PADUCAH, Ky – Jacksonville State's men's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Tennis Championship late Friday night with a 4-0 win over Morehead State in the opening round of the championship.
Due to the heavy rains that plagued the region on Friday, the championship was moved indoors to the Rowton Indoor Tennis Complex in Paducah. The Gamecocks will have a quick turnaround as they will face top-seeded Eastern Kentucky on Saturday at 2 p.m. Friday's win over the Eagles is the second of the season as JSU edged the Blue and Gold, 4-3 in the regular season.
The Gamecocks opened the shut out victory by claiming the doubles point. The Jax State tandem on Brian Kenyon and Gustavo Holz topped MSU's team of Lovell Bryan and Bradley Bryan, 8-5, at the top position. At No. 2, JSU's pairing of Nenad Marcec and Axel Sundberg turned back David Clifford and Justin Harlow of MSU, 8-6.
JSU's pair of All-OVC Second Team selections in Kenyon and Sundberg carried the momentum from the doubles point win into their respective singles matches. Kenyon, playing at No. 1, finished off Harlow in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Sundberg made quick work of B. Bryan at No. 2. Igor Santos returned to the line up and showed no ill effects of his absence from the court as he posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over MSU's Seve Day at No. 4.
In championship play, once the match has been clinched, all other individual matches are halted.
The top-seeded JSU women's team, who received an opening-round bye, will take on Austin Peay at 10 a.m. in the semifinals after APSU downed Morehead State, 4-3, on Friday.
