Gamecocks Dominate OVC Men's Golf All-Conference Awards

DICKSON, Tenn. - Jacksonville State's Matthew Wallace became the third Gamecock golfer to win the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year award and four Gamecocks were named to the first-team All-Conference squad on Monday night at a banquet following the first day of play at the 2011 OVC Men's Golf Championship.

The OVC Player and Coach of the Year awards will be announced on Wednesday afternoon following the final round of play at the championship, which is being held at the GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn.
2011 OVC Freshman of the Year

Wallace, who was also a first-team All-OVC selection this season, ranked sixth in the OVC in stroke average during his rookie campaign (73.3). He earned OVC Golfer of the Week honors on Oct. 20 after finishing second out of 92 golfers at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.

At that event Wallace fired a second round score of 62 (-10), which broke JSU records for lowest 18-hole score and best round to par. In that performance the London, England native had two eagles in the final five holes of the round. Wallace finished out the regular season with a fifth place finish out of 102 golfers at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate. Wallace joins former JSU players Daniel Willett (2006) and Hunter Hawkins (2009) in winning the award.

Jacksonville State's Tom Robson was a repeat selection on the All-OVC first-team and was joined by three players who were second-team selections last year in Jax State's Andres Schonbaum and Gonzalo Berlin and Murray State's Cameron Carrico. The first-team was rounded out by Wallace, the Freshman of the Year.

Carrico, who was a three-time All-OVC second-team selection before earning first-team honors this season, had the top GolfStat National Ranking in the league (205 nationally) and the best stroke average in the OVC (71.1). Robson was second in the OVC in stroke average (72.7) while Berlin was third (72.8), Schonbaum fourth (72.9) and Wallace sixth (73.3). The four first-team selections for JSU marked the first time one school has accomplished that feat in a single year in OVC men's golf history (under the current five-person team format).

The All-OVC second-team included three Austin Peay and two Eastern Kentucky student-athletes. The Austin Peay selections included freshmen Anthony Bradley and Marco Iten and sophomore Dustin Korte. The EKU picks were juniors Brian Fister and Billy Peel, Jr.

For the fifth year in a row the All-OVC first and second-teams were determined by GolfStat National Rankings. OVC coaches voted on the All-Newcomer Team and Freshman of the Year awards.

Wallace, the Freshman of the Year, and second-team selections Bradley and Iten, were three of the five selections on the OVC All-Newcomer Team. That trio was joined by Eastern Kentucky's Garrett Hinton and Murray State's Hunter York.

The 2011 OVC Men's Golf Championship continues with 18 holes on Tuesday and 18 holes on Wednesday.
