CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Jacksonville State's women's tennis team will compete for its second-straight Ohio Valley Conference regular season title on Saturday at UT Martin after turning back Austin Peay, 5-2, on Friday. The APSU men downed the Jax State squad, 6-1.
The Gamecocks will test the Skyhawks, who enter the match 7-0 in league play, at 2 p.m. on the UTM campus. With the win over Lady Govs, JSU moved to 6-1 in the OVC and evened its season's mark at 10-10. The win was also Jax State's fourth straight win. The Gamecock men have secured the No. 4 seed in next week's OVC Championships.
The Red and White took the early lead after claiming the double point. The No. 3 duo of
Juliana Renesto and
Rafaela Wenzel blanked APSU's pairing of Rachel Margoliesand Brittany Hays, 8-0. The first point of the match was clinched after Jax State's tandem of
Raphaela Lima and
Raisa Guasti edged Andra Cornea and Vanja Tomic, 9-7.
Guasti, Lima, Wenzel and
Martina Dessbesell carried the momentum from doubles play into singles as all four claimed wins to clinch the match. Guasti posted a win at No. 2 after Margolies retired in the first set after trailing 5-3. Lima surged past Cornea after dropping the first set, 6-4, to win the next two – 7-5, 6-1. Wenzel won in straight sets over APSU's Hays at No. 6 – 6-4, 6-2. Dessbesell outlasted Carolin Weikard in three sets after falling 6-4 in the opening set.
The lone JSU point in the men's match came by way of
Felipe Watanabe on court No. 5. After falling to Remi Calleja 6-4 in the first set, Watanabe rebounded to post a 6-4, 10-8 win. With the win, he moved to 5-1 in league play.
