MURRAY, Ky. – Kyle Bluestein and Blake Seguin each had four hits as Jacksonville State cruised to a 20-7 win over Murray State in the first game of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series, while the 'Breds took a 12-6 win in the second game.
Jax State improved to 21-10, 5-3 to remain in first place in the Ohio Valley Conference by one-half game.
In the opener, Aaron Elias (5-1) had five strikeouts and allowed 10 hits in six solid innings on the mound to earn the win. Tyler Beers (3-4) got stuck with the loss after giving up six run and eight hits in 2 2/3 innings for Murray State.
The Gamecocks pounded out 25 hits, the most hits against an OVC opponent since joining the league in 2003 and the second most hits under Jim Case. The Gamecocks had 22 hits three times against OVC foes, last time was at Morehead State on May 3, 2008.
JSU had 12 of 13 players recorded a hit in the game, including the four hits each by Bluestein and Seguin. Jake Sharrock, Sam Eberle, Ben Waldrip, Erik Underwood, Andrew Bishop, Michael Bishop and Stephen Bartlett each had two hits for the Gamecocks. Waldrip, Eberle and Bluestein each had home runs in the win.
JSU built a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning after Bluestein led off with a solo homerun, while Blanchard and Sharrock each drove in a run to give the Gamecocks the early lead.
Murray plated a pair of runs in the home half of the second to cut the lead to 3-2, but JSU added three runs in the third thanks to a two-RBI double by Michael Bishop as the Gamecocks took a 6-2 lead.
Jax State then scored five runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run home run by Waldrip, as the Gamecocks held an 11-2 lead after four innings.
JSU extended the lead in the top of the fifth inning after Eberle slugged a two-run home run to give the Gamecocks a 13-2 lead, but Murray scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut the lead to 13-5.
Jacksonville State then put the game out of reach with four runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth inning to take a 20-5 advantage. Murray State added a run in the eighth and ninth innings for the final margin.
Cody Larson led the 'Breds with three hits, while Jacob Rhodes and MPaul Ritzheimer each had two hits.
In the second game, Zach Noonan went 3-for-4 and drove in six runs to lead the 'Breds to a 12-6 win.
Jake Donze (5-1) threw 150 pitches and walked seven, but had six strikeouts in six innings on the mound to earn the win for Murray. Bradley Raulston (2-1) gave up 10 runs in just 1 1/3 innings to suffer the loss for the Gamecocks.
Murray State scored six runs in the first inning, highlighted by Noonan's grand slam, and then added five more runs in the second to build an 11-0 lead.
