MURRAY, Ky. – Kyle Bluestein went 4-for-5 and scored four runs as Jacksonville State rallied for a 10-9 win over Murray State as the Gamecocks won their ninth straight series on Sunday.
The Gamecocks improved to 22-10 on the season and 6-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference to remain in first place. Murray State dropped to 13-17 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
Hunter Rivers (5-1) pitched three innings of relief and allowed just three hits and had three strikeouts to earn the win, while Todd Hornsby recorded the final six outs to pick up his ninth save of the year. Cameron Finch (0-2) gave up just one hit and one run in 2 2/3 innings, but got stuck with the loss for Murray State.
The Gamecocks jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Ben Waldrip drove in two runs, while Bluestein and Blake Seguin each drove in a run as JSU sent all nine batters to the plate.
The 'Breds scored a run in the bottom of the first on a RBI single by Jacob Rhodes, but JSU pushed the lead to 6-1 in the third inning after Bluestein led off with a solo home run, his third of the week and fifth of the season.
Murray State then scored four runs in the third on a two-RBI double by Zach Noonan, while Cody Larson and Paul Ritzheimer each drove in a run to cut the lead to 6-5.
Scott Underwood then hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to give JSU a 7-5 lead, but Murray pushed across four runs in the home half of the fourth inning to take its first lead of the day.
Noonan, Larson, Elliott Frey and Ty Stetson each drove in a run – all with two outs – to give the 'Breds a 9-7 lead.
Jax State scored a run in the fifth on an Andrew Bishop RBI single, and then scored two more in the seventh inning when Bluestein scored on a wild pitch and Coty Blanchard had a RBI single up the middle to give the Gamecocks the lead.
Scott Underwood and Blanchard each had two hits to go along with Bluestein's four hits as the Gamecocks finished with 13 in the game. Brandon Elliott and Frey led Murray with three hits, while Stetson, Noonan and Larson each finished with two hits.
Jacksonville State returns to action on Tuesday against in-state and nationally ranked Troy. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. at Rudy Abbott Field.
