JACKSONVILLE – Zach Hawkins had three hits and Spencer Patton struck out 11 as Southern Illinois Edwardsville held on for an 8-5 win over Jacksonville State to avoid the three-game sweep at Rudy Abbott Field on Sunday.
Patton (6-3) scattered five hits through seven innings on the mound to earn the win. Jordan Beisline (4-1) gave up four runs and lasted just 3 2/3 innings to suffer his first loss of the year for the Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks (27-15) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after Stephen Barlett and Michael Bishop each drove in a run, but SIUE took the lead for good in the fourth inning.
The Cougars (19-22) plated four runs in the fourth inning after Joel Greatting, Brett Keeler, Thad Hawkins and Chase Green each drove in a run for a 4-2 SIUE lead.
Southern Illinois Edwardsville added two more runs in the fifth inning after Mitch Matecki and Devin Caldwell both reached on one-out singles. Matechki then scored on a failed pickoff attempt by the Gamecocks to first that rolled down the right field line and Caldwell advanced to third. Zach Hawkins then hit a sacrifice fly as SIUE took a 6-2 lead.
The Cougars added two more runs in the seventh after Hawkins singled up the middle to score two more runs for a 8-2 lead.
Jax State rallied in the ninth inning and scored three runs after Scott Underwood, Christo Sullivan and Jake Sharrock each drove in a run, but Hawkins struck out the final two Gamecocks with bases loaded for the final margin.

Jacksonville State returns to action on Tuesday at nationally-ranked Troy. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Riddle-Pace Field and the game will be carried on the JSU Radio Network.
