BIRMINGHAM – Keith DePew had a pair of hits and drove in two runs to lead UAB tro a 4-2 win over Jacksonville State at Young Memorial Field on Wednesday evening.
The Blazers improve to 27-22 on the season, while Jax State drops to 28-20.
Trey Waltman (2-1) scattered six hits and recorded five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings to earn the win, while Jacob German did not allow a hit over the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up his first save. JSU's Taylor Sparks (0-2) gave up just four hits, but allowed three runs to suffer the loss for the Gamecocks.
Jax State took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after Blake Seguin drew a two-out walk and Andrew Bishop followed with a double to right center to score Seguin. Michael Bishop followed with a RBI single to left field to score Andrew Bishop and give the Gamecocks the early lead.
The Blazers tied the game in the fifth inning after Harry Clark scored on a balk and DePew had a RBI single to make the score 2-2.
UAB took the lead for good in the sixth inning as Patrick Palmeiro slugged his eighth home run of the season with a solo shot over the left field wall to give the Blazers a 3-2 lead.
The Blazers added an insurance run in the seventh inning as DePew singled through the right side to drive in his second run of the game for the final margin.
