JACKSONVILLE – Michael Bishop had a RBI single up the middle to score Ben Waldrip as Jacksonville State claimed a 2-1 win in extra innings over Eastern Kentucky as the two teams split an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday after the Colonels claimed a 4-1 win in the series opener.
The Gamecocks improve to 29-21 on the season and 10-9 in the OVC, while EKU drops to 20-30 and 11-12.
JSU's Todd Hornsby (4-4) had five strikeouts and allowed only three hits over the final 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Anthony Bazzani (1-8) gave up three hits in 1 1/3 innings to suffer the loss for the Colonels.
EKU scored its only run in the top of the first inning after A.J. Jamison scored on an infield grounder by Bryan Solomon to take a 1-0 lead.
Jax State tied the game in the fourth inning after Blake Seguin led off with a single to right field and then stole second. Erik Underwood followed with a two-out single through the right side to score Seguin and tie the game at 1-1.
Waldrip led off the home half of the ninth inning with a walk and moved to second on an Andrew Bishop sacrifice bunt. Michael Bishop then hit the first pitch he saw up the middle to score Waldrip and give the Gamecocks their 19th come-from-behind win of the season.
Underwood led the Gamecocks after finished 3-for-3 with a RBI and walk, while Dustin Dunlop had three hits for Eastern Kentucky.
In the opener, Richie Rodriguez had three hits and Bryan Soloman added two more hits to lead the Colonels to a 4-1 win.
EKU took a 1-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly by Solomon, then extended the lead in the third inning on a RBI single by Solomon to give the Colonels a 2-0 advantage.
The Colonels added a run in the fifth inning on a bases loaded walk and then took a 4-0 lead in the seventh after Solomon scored on a wild pitch.
Jax State scored its only run in the bottom of the seventh after Scott Underwood had a one-out double and Andrew Bishop followed with a RBI double for the final margin.
Jake Sharrock led the Gamecocks with a pair of hits in the opener.
The two teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Rudy Abbott Field.
