Gamecock Baseball Falls to Troy in 11-innings

TROY – Josh McDorman had a pinch-hit double to score Daniel Peterson in the bottom of the 11th inning to lead Troy to an 8-7 win over Jacksonville State at Riddle-Pace Field on Tuesday.

Nick Ward (2-0) picked up the win after tossing the final two innings in relief for the Trojans, while Daniel Watts (0-4) got stuck with the loss for the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Coty Blanchard led the game off with a single and Sam Eberle slugged a two-run home run over the right field wall.

Adam Bryant hit a solo home run in the home half of the first to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Gamecocks pushed across four runs in the second inning.

Scott Underwood walked and Stephen Bartlett followed with a two-out single. Blanchard followed with a RBI single to score Underwood before Jake Sharrock hit a 3-run home run to right center to give the Gamecocks a 6-1 lead.

The Trojans scored a pair of runs in the second after Boone Shear and Tyler Hannah each drove in a run, and Logan Pierce hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-4.

Jax State scored a run in the sixth inning after Scott Underwood led off with a double and Bartlett followed with a one-out double down the left field line to score Underwood as the Gamecocks took a 7-4 lead.

Troy battled back in the sixth inning and cut the lead to 7-6 after Todd McRae had a RBI and Adam Bryant scored on a Gamecock balk, then the Trojans tied the game in the sixth inning after Blake Martz had a pinch-hit solo home run to tie the game at 7-7.

Blanchard finished with three hits, while Sharrock, Eberle, Seguin and Bartlett each had two hits as the Gamecocks had 14 hits in the game.

Jacksonville State will travel to Charleston, Ill., this weekend for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Eastern Illinois. The series will start on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader before wrapping up with a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday.
