JACKSONVILLE – After a 10-match road wing to open the season, the Jacksonville State volleyball team will make a much-needed appearance at Pete Mathews Coliseum on Tuesday against Tennessee Tech at 6 p.m.
The Gamecocks (2-8) welcome a Golden Eagles (1-9) squad into the friendly confines of The Pete for JSU head coach Joseph Goodson's first home game at the helm. Both teams are looking for a fresh start as they open Ohio Valley Conference play and get a rematch of the first round of last year's OVC Tournament in which TTU eliminated the Gamecocks.
Jax State also welcomes the end of what has been one of the most challenging non-conference schedules in program history, one that has featured two Top 25 programs and three teams that were in the NCAA Tournament in 2010. The eight teams that JSU has fallen to so far this season have a combined record of 50-25.
JSU will be trying to ride the momentum of a sweep of Western Carolina on Saturday that wrapped up its non-conference slate. The win over the Catamounts saw senior Liza Senenkova rattle off 12 kills and block three attacks to cap an impressive weekend. Over the three-match Purdue Active Ankle Challenge, the Tashkent, Uzbekistan, native averaged 3.2 kills and 1.0 blocks per set on a .303 attack percentage to earn all-tournament honors.
Senior Stephanie Koontz has led the JSU offense through its first 10 matches with 2.64 kills per set, while Senenkova and junior Hivya Leite are averaging 2.41 and 2.29, respectively.
On the defensive side of the net, senior Lauren Harkins leads the way with 3.26 digs per set. The Louisville, Ky., native has already set the school's career digs record this season and, with 1,825 so far, moved into 12th on the OVC's career digs list over the weekend.
Sophomore Abbey Heredia and freshman Alina Agamy have split the setting duties for the Gamecocks so far, with Heredia dishing 5.06 per set and Agamy pitching in 4.47 per set.
Tennessee Tech's Natalie Penrod leads the Golden Eagles with 2.97 kills per set, while Alison May's 4.33 digs per set is tops on defense.
The match will be the first of a two-match homestand for JSU, who will host UT Martin on Saturday at 6 p.m. following the Gamecocks' 2:30 p.m. football game vs. Georgia State. Admission is free to all JSU home matches.
