JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team will look to continue its recent winning ways on Saturday, when the Gamecocks host UT Martin at 6 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Admission is free.
The Gamecocks (3-8, 1-0 Ohio Valley Conference) have won their last two matches, including an impressive 3-0 sweep of Tennessee Tech on Tuesday that opened both OVC play and JSU's 2011 home schedule. They look to continue that stretch against a Skyhawks (5-5, 0-0 OVC) team that has had one of the best non-conference schedules in the league.
The meeting will be the 14th all-time between JSU and UTM, with the Gamecocks holding an 11-2 advantage in the previous meetings. Jax State has won the least five meetings and is 5-2 against UTM in Pete Mathews Coliseum. The Skyhawks' last win over the Gamecocks came on Oct. 10, 2008. It will be the first time JSU head coach Joseph Goodson has faced UT Martin.
In Jax State's win over TTU on Tuesday, the Gamecocks got a double-double of 13 kills and 11 digs from junior Hivya Leite. The Cabedelo, Brazil, native used a .385 attack percentage on 16 swings to account for her 13 kills, while her 11 digs tied senior Lauren Harkins for the team lead. The JSU defense held TTU to a .155 attack percentage and just 30 kills over the three sets. The Gamecocks hit .276 with 46 kills, while blocking four shots and finding the floor on five service aces.
Leite is averaging 2.57 kills per set, which puts her in the middle of trio of Gamecocks averaging 2.41 or higher. She is between senior Stephanie Koontz's 2.64 and senior Liza Senenkova's 2.41. Harkins, the school's career digs leader with 1,836, leads the JSU defense with 3.30 digs per set so far in 2011. Her career total ranks her 12th on the OVC's career leaders list.
The Skyhawks (5-5, 0-0 OVC) will get their OVC slate underway Friday night at Tennessee Tech before making the trip to Jacksonville on Saturday. Entering conference play, they have five players averaging 2.29 kills per set or higher, while Kelsey Elswick's 6.45 digs per set lead the OVC by 1.61.
