Gamecocks Drop Final Game of Long Road Trip to SEMO

Box Score

CAPE GARIARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri used a second-half run to pull away from the Jacksonville State men's basketball team on Monday night and end the Gamecocks' eight-day road trip with a 74-56 loss in Ohio Valley Conference play.

The Redhawks (7-7, 2-0 OVC) used a 15-0 run in the second half that broke the game open and rode a game-high 24 points from Tyler Stone to down the Gamecocks (5-11, 0-3 OVC) for just the fifth time in 16 meetings in the all-time series.

The Gamecocks got 19 points from sophomore Brian Williams, but the Lawrenceville, Ga., native was the lone JSU player in double figures. Junior Tarvin Gaines scored all nine of his points in the first half, while senior Stephen Hall scored six of his eight in the game's first 20 minutes. JSU struggled in its fourth game in the past six days, all away from home, shooting just 32 percent from the floor, 27 percent in the second half.

Stone, a transfer from Missouri that is in his first season with the Redhawks, was 10-for-16 from the floor and grabbed six rebounds. More importantly, he was the catalyst to a second-half spurt that saw SEMO make 11 of its first 16 attempts from the floor to open up the game.

Marcus Brister led all players with eight boards to go along with his 14 points, while Marland Smith tossed in 11 points for SEMO. The Redhawks shot 50 percent on the night, including a 60-percent effort in the second half.

JSU freshman Darion Rackley scored eight points off of the bench.

The Redhawks scored the game's first 11 points and looked like they could possibly run away early, but JSU buckled down and battled back. The Gamecocks scored 16 of the next 20 points to take a 16-15 lead. The Redhawks answered with a 3-pointer by Corey Wilford that put them back on top and they pushed the lead to 34-28 before the half.

Gaines scored nine for JSU in the first 20 minutes, while Williams added eight. Stone led SEMO with 10 points in the first half.

The Gamecocks cut it to two at 43-41 early in the second half, but SEMO erupted to score the next 15 points and create a 58-41 lead with just under 10 minutes to play.

The Gamecocks return home for a quick homestand that will welcome defending OVC champion Morehead State on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Tennessee State for a 4:30 p.m. tipoff on Saturday at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
