JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team returns to Pete Mathews Coliseum to open a home-heavy closing stretch of the season on Thursday with a 7 p.m. game with Eastern Illinois.
The Gamecocks open the final 10 games of the regular season Thursday against the Panthers in the first of seven home games remaining on the schedule and the first of a three-game homestand.
Jax State's date with EIU, the 15th all-time, is a big one in the race for the OVC Tournament at the end of February. Fighting for one of the eight spots in the league tourney, the Gamecocks sit just one game behind the Panthers in the standings. Thursday marks the only meeting of the season between the two.
JSU looks to build upon the momentum gained from a thrilling 63-62 win at Tennessee Tech a week ago, when junior Dion Waiters converted on an old-fashioned 3-point play with one second to play to lift the Gamecocks to their first road win of the season. Before pulling out the win, JSU trailed by four with less than 10 seconds to play in a game in which it was trimmed to 10 players by personnel issues and injuries.
The Gamecocks bring the OVC's top field goal defense into the homestand, holding foes to a .418 field goal percentage. They are also limiting foes to a .304 shooting percentage from behind the 3-point line, third best in the OVC and in the top 50 in the nation.
Sophomore Brian Williams leads JSU with 12.1 points per game, while junior Tarvin Gaines is pitching in 10.3 points per night.
The Panthers, who have lost three in a row, are getting 16.4 points per game from Jeremy Granger, while Alfonzo McKinnie and Joey Miller are tossing in 10.9 and 10.4 points per game, respectively. McKinnie's 7.6 rebounds per game are third in the OVC.
